I tried out Coloplast’s new Sensura Mio bag. Here’s my initial reaction to the new bag and some of its features. It uses new material for both the wafer and the bag covering. It also has a peek-a-boo pocket so you can check on your stoma, if you need. It’s available in 1-piece and 2-piece click and flex. I’m excited to see that new and better ostomy products are becoming available!
If you want to try out the Sensura Mio ostomy bag, here’s how you can order some free samples.
UPDATE 01/18/16: The convex option is now available! Follow the above link to try out a free sample.

Thanks for this. I just ordered this yesterday. Looking forward to hearing more about your experience on this and it helps me to learn too.
June 26, 2014 at 9:45 pmI just got my ileostomy 6 weeks ago and have been trialing a myriad of bags. The Sensura Mio one piece has definitely been my favorite. I thought I finally found the bag for me, however, I seem to be having some sort of skin reaction to the adhesive. My skin was itching and burning and quite painful to the touch. There was not a lot of erythema of the skin and no breakdown, but the burning and pain has made it unbearable to use. I’m very disappointed. Has anyone else experienced this?
September 23, 2015 at 8:45 pmYes, big time skin irritation/pruritis! I like the bag and wide velcro outlet so much I modified the bag. I use the convatec moldable ring from the one piece bag and then cut a wider hole out of the center of the mio bag. I also cut a Brava barrier sheet and place that on peripherally next to the convatec moldable ring and THEN place the mio bag over that so that no skin is exposed to the MIO adhesive.
November 30, 2015 at 8:28 pmYes! I have had an iliostomy for 14 years now and after I had my twins 7 years ago, my skin suddenly became sensitive to the adhesive. Here are some tips to try as I feel like I have scoured the earth looking for some relief with irritated skin. One: clobetasol is a foam steroid that can be used to provide some relief but it needs to be used sparingly as it does thin the skin over a long period of use, two: clindimycin in liquid form and comes in a container that look like a small bingo dobber and three: line your wafer area with paper tape first! Heat your water on top of the water using a hair dryer afterwards… And after each application of meds. This has saved my life! I’ve had some pretty unbearable rashes in the past and empathize with you.
March 29, 2016 at 8:53 amI too experienced this “irritation. I found I could not “trust” this Mio either!! Having an Ileostomy for 45 years, I do know how to apply an appliance correctly, but got leaks from this one. I even used BRAVA Strips surrounding the flange, but got leaks right upto the strips. The flange is just not “sticky” enough, so it lifts up around the stoma, particularly caused by the often loose output from an Ileostomy. The BEST flange material I have found is on the Salts Convex one piece. It is SO sticky.
May 21, 2016 at 3:21 amI love everything else about the Mio. Love it’s flat profile, pale grey colour AND the material used for the bag itself is wonderful. It dries in no time after taking a shower.
Hope the manufacturers address this problem with leaking from under the flange, then this would be my Holy Grail appliance.
Same here….loved the bag but had repeated leaks. I thought I was doing something wrong – checked with my nurse -made sure I dried thoroughly and used a Secuplast Aloe ring, but just now it gave way without warning.
June 4, 2016 at 5:27 pmWill go back to my old Oakmed option range -not so cool, but the adhesive was better.
I’ve had my ileostomy for 1 year next month.
Yes Jan. Well, as I said, having my Ileostomy for 45 years, I guess I’ve tried every bag out there. Every new one that comes out, I give it a good “trial”. I thought I had found my holy grail in this Mio. I LOVED the look of it…the colour, the material, its low profile. My bomb-proof bag (which I haven’t found one to beat) is one by Salts. I don’t NEED a convex bag, but their Convex one piece is SUPERB. I have never, and I repeat NEVER had a leak with them. Doing gardening (constantly bending, reaching, etc., swimming, horse riding, and walking for a good few miles). I wear it over a Salts Cohesive washer – and that’s it. If you’d like that bag’s full detail, just reply to me and I’d be happy to give them to you. The flange on it is large and super-sticky. Not found one like it!! However, the profile of it is not as flat as the Mio. The problem with the Mio is the INNER ring on their flange. It is just not sticky enough, so it “lifts” up from around the stoma, so the leak then travels to the outer edge of the flange – and OUT – YUK!!
June 5, 2016 at 4:11 amTeddy burr would love your bags full detail.
August 28, 2016 at 2:14 amI think I was told by rep who sent me samples NOT to use any powder like stoma powder under the ring?I have not tried Mio yet but may tomorrow just got my sample?Did you use any stoma powder like crusting just around the stoma to cause leaks?
June 17, 2016 at 8:15 pmWell Susie, I’ve had my Ileostomy for 45 years. I’ve never, I repeat NEVER been able to wear ANY appliance, ANY make, without getting a leak if I use any stoma POWDER. I’ve tried applying it and blowing off excess, from just right around the stoma, and have ensured no powder is on any surrounding skin. No washer or wafer will stick to the powder. Even tried dampening the powder a bit – no luck. Such a shame, as on one small area of red skin right next to my stoma the powder had managed to stay on the skin until I had to change my appliance, and the powder had worked!! The skin was not so red. Back to the Mio – tried it with many ring washers, on its own, with surround strips – and STILL got leaks. It’s the INNER RING on the Mio that effluent gets past. I love the design, colour and everything about the bag – I just cannot trust it, especially underneath tight jeans!!
June 20, 2016 at 6:33 amHi I am having the same reaction to these wafers. Burning is unbearable
January 23, 2018 at 8:16 pmTeddy Burr – I’m looking for an easier ostomy bag for my mom. Right now she has a 2-piece Hollister bag and it is cumbersome for her. I would like to find out more about the Salts information. I was looking at the SenSura Mio but mom would not be happy with leaks! Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!
May 1, 2018 at 6:46 pmI’ve been using the mio one piece for a month now and love it. I find the fabric is more durable. In other models, I find the filter does not last long with me. With the Mio, the filters tend to last longer. The size of the filter takes some getting used to, but I like it better than the ballooning! My experience has been I am able to go longer between bag changes with the mio, and I have less leakage issues.
June 26, 2014 at 10:25 pmI was recently on vacation and spent two days in the pool without having to change the bag. The seal was great for me. I even forgot to put a sticker over the filter and it was fine.
I find the system more flexible for me. It moves better with my body and less pulling when I bend. So far, I am a fan!
Thank you so much for this review! My supply company just sent me a couple samples to try out so I’m interested to see how I will like them too! I really like that extra folding feature you mentioned!
June 27, 2014 at 9:54 amI tried the mio a while back. I typically need a light convex baseplate, but was told this one may mold better to my skin around stoma. Unfortunately, I had no luck. Consistent leaks. Just to note, I have only had my permanent illestomy since December, and have had 2 revisions since, so I’m dealing with A TON of skin issues. Just can’t seem to get my skin healed. I also requested samples off the new convatec bags. They’re suppose to be super moldable, too. I would love to find someone else that has had issues with A loop stoma. I am so grateful to have found your blog, and I appreciate your openness and willingness to tell your story and share information you find.
June 27, 2014 at 6:47 pmI guess you are fixed up by now but this might help someone else . I swear by Eakin cohesive slims . 839005 . They are a kind of washer which prevents leaks . I haven’t had any problems since I found these . Such a simple idea ….you don’t need accuracy as they fill in the gaps and leave the skin perfect underneath . I have a loop and need convex by the way .
April 29, 2015 at 4:29 pmIf you have skin irritation nothing is going to stick well. My mother is 93 and has had her ileostomy since 2010 We use Convatec moldable. Purchase Cavilon no sting barrier film. I purchase hers from Amazon (about $25 for 25). You should change more often than you normally would until the irritation is healed. Use it every time when changing your wafer (even after irritation has cleared up). Was informed about this from the wound care nurse & it is a life saver. I change hers every 3 days but could go 4. We have not had a leak in years.
July 25, 2016 at 11:13 amI am having a lot of problems with my loop right now. I have only had mine for almost two months… But it’s been a constant problem since.
January 10, 2018 at 3:08 pmThank you so much for this! I’m trying to figure this all out myself, so learning and hearing about new products is so helpful. Also, your positive attitude and spin is so refreshing! Thank you for taking the time and generosity to share your experiences with fellow ostomates. 🙂
June 27, 2014 at 10:58 pmHi Laurie! I work for Coloplast and just saw your post about trying the new Mio. Sorry to hear you had some troubles with the pouch! If I can help you at all with questions you might have, I’d be happy to help in any way I can.
June 28, 2014 at 2:34 pmSusie, thanks. I feel like my skin needs to heal, and I’ll have better luck trying new products. I am definitely open to help! Thanks.
June 28, 2014 at 5:19 pmi tried the mio i love it,i have no insurance so i need to find cheapest place to buy them
October 4, 2015 at 6:05 pmI am worried about cleaning it! The small velcro circle tabs on the underside seem to collect stool and it’s impossible to burp the bag from the coupling which is annoying as hell as I have to walk to the bathroom to burp it at night 🙁 do you have any tips for cleaning it?
March 20, 2018 at 2:09 pmI have low muscle tone in my abdomen and have trouble clicking the two pieces together. When I put them together and then adhere to my skin, I worry that I am not centering properly. Any hints on how to click the two together? Thanks.
July 24, 2014 at 4:44 pmHi Marie! My name is Susie, and I work for Coloplast. I saw your comment and thought I would offer our suggestion! If you like attaching the barrier and pouch to one another first, then applying them both as one piece, the little “window” (the slit material on the front of the pouch) may help you center the barrier properly — just lift the fabric slightly to reveal a clear view of your stoma. That said, if you prefer applying the barrier to your skin first — and then the pouch second — one trick that seems to work for a lot of people is either pulling the skin taut upon application, or changing the position in which you apply the pouch. Have you tried attaching the pouch while lying down? If the ring on the barrier is bent (e.g. if your stoma is in a fold when you sit or stand), it can be a little more difficult to attach the pouch — so changing position may help. If you’d like to talk through this or other ideas, you can give us a call at 1-855-605-7588. We have a team dedicated to answering any product- or lifestyle-related questions you may have.
July 30, 2014 at 4:44 pmI love the mio, I had a hard time attaching the pouch at first too, so when I get my supplies I go ahead and attach all the pouches to the wafer, and it seems that when I do go to change and un-connect and reconnect the go back together easier, plus I lay down to attach, I do know I get better wear time.
March 3, 2015 at 11:16 pmI have just received the samples of the bag-sensura-mio I am a little scared with it I am a Hollister user and not use to the stick on pouch. I will be trying it out soon and see from what I am hearing it does sound good. I am a firefighter and need something that will hold up with sweating. I can admit I have belly fat and have been afraid to do to much bending do to leaks and blow outs. I have been an ostomy for 7 years now with an ileostomy. Any suggestion on coloplast products to try let me know

May 12, 2015 at 12:02 amHello. My mom has fatty belly. We still dealing with leaks. Which Hollister product are you using that prevents you from leaking?
March 22, 2018 at 7:00 pmI have difficulty with SEVERE BALLOONING using any of the appliances tried thus far. I
August 6, 2016 at 9:06 amI have had difficulty with SEVERE BALLOONING with any appliance thus far. The mionly fabric keeps me. However. I may have to leave Mio as within an hour all filters are clogged n of no use. I wish there was a add on filter that I could snap flush on the outside n just pop the cap to release the ballooning night n day. I have an ileostomy. I have such build up of gas they are forever blowing up while sleeping. So now I just can’t sleep for fear of the mess. I can’t leave my home. I don’t eat anything gassy low residue,no fiber diet. I take metamucil for a thickening agent. I empty FREQUENTLY. Is there a better set up than the Mio? I’m in the process of designing my own. We can send a man to the moon n yet a simple task for keeping an ileo. Non ballooning, non irritating product is not possible. Sorry, frustrated and annoyed.
August 6, 2016 at 9:17 amElizabeth, the Vegan Ostomy guy (www.veganostomy.ca) reviewed a product called Osto EZ-Vent that sounds like just what you’re looking for. The full review is at http://www.veganostomy/osto-ez-vent-review.
January 6, 2017 at 8:52 pmHi there!
August 23, 2014 at 9:35 pmI’m currently in the hospital with my new stomy(Sammy!) the nurse came in and helped me get set up with a few samples w/ edgepark. I am currently wearing one of the newest bags made from convatec. ( looks exactly like the one Steph showed at end of video). It’s been on for two days and i’m not quite happy with this bag. First reason, the tape that sticks to my skin doesn’t stick completely around, i have not experienced a leak yet, but i’ve been very observant. Also, i can feel my skin underneith the tape get itchy and its burning a little, so this tells me i’m having some sort of reaction. Last, and this could be me being self concious but I can smell my odor from the bag, even after cleaning the inside very well as directed. Again, it hasn’t been a week yet and my father said he can’t smell anything, but i’m concerned about that and being in public if it smells. I do enjoy the fact that it has the glue that i can manipulate rather than cutting and measuring the opening for Sammy. I plan on searching for more bags that have this glue like/ pre cut measurements, mainly because Sammy is still big and trying to heal.
Hi Renee! I saw your post and thought I would offer my support. It can be difficult to find a solution that works for you! Every body is different, and those first few months after surgery can hard.
August 25, 2014 at 12:59 pmI work for a Coloplast- a company that makes a range of ostomy pouches and accessories. Here is the number in case you’d like to reach out at your convenience: 1-855-863-3913.
I’ve not yet tried it… Did you like it? I heard the bags are not that good.
September 8, 2014 at 9:22 amI have been using it for a couple of months. I like that, if I have gas, it doesn’t turn into a huge bubble. So in that sense, the filter seems to work. And I like how you can tuck it under (thanks for showing us that – not sure I would have figured it out!).
September 8, 2014 at 11:14 amHowever, I find that I need to change it every other day – the odor gets really strong and noticeable after about a day and a half. I used to use the Assura bags, which I changed every 4 days or so. I’m going to try another month of these and if I need to continue to change so often, I will likely return to using the Assura bags.
Hi Laura. I have tried out the Mio. I have a pretty standard Colostomy, no skin issues. I tried the Mio Click 2 piece system. I found it too difficult to attach the pouch on to the barrier disc, it was next to impossible to empty if the stool was at all runny, sticky or anything other than perfectly formed. The new large filter was collecting waste and almost no amount of effort was enough to clean it out. I also found the click attachment system to hard to secure (if you use a 2 piece.) On the plus side I LOVE the barrier disc. It is supple and flexible and moves with your body well. I also like the fabric and color. I decided to not use the Mio and go back to the Coloplast Sensura Click system. Far too difficult to empty! Yuck! LOL
September 11, 2014 at 6:18 pmI was glad to read your comment because I tried the 2 piece today and was very discouraged trying to get the bag to attach! It took me 15 minutes, I’m so disappointed that it is so hard to do since I love all the other features.
September 16, 2014 at 1:02 pmHi Kim. It was very difficult to attach. I had to use a lot of pressure to get the pouch to attach to the wafer. Once I did I also had a problem locking it and was unsure about a good attachment because the audible click I’m used to with the Coloplast Sensura Click system was not really very audible.
September 16, 2014 at 7:39 pmKim & Bryan, have y’all tried the Flex pouch? You can still get the features of the Mio and a 2-piece without having to worry about snapping anything into place.
September 17, 2014 at 10:31 amWhat is that one called? Because I am having trouble with the snapping and when I called Coloplast, they didn’t mention that. They just told me to snap it together before I put it on. Maybe if I ask specifically for it, they can send it. Thanks!
September 17, 2014 at 10:34 amMarie, if you go to this link, under preferred type of pouching system, choose New Sensura Mio 2P with Flex Coupling. Or next time you speak with them, just say the “two-piece Flex” and they’ll know what you mean.
September 17, 2014 at 10:46 amStephanie
May 11, 2015 at 6:03 pmI wonder how it has worked out for you the two piece sensura-mio. I have never had a bag that stuck on rather than clip on did it do ok with you since I see you have an ileostomy too?
I also had difficulties attaching the bad. The Coloplast staff provided some tips, but they did not work for me. After buying my first box, I read the instruction explaining how to attach the bad. The instructions work like a charm:
February 4, 2015 at 2:56 pm“Press the point and the barrier together at the bottom [or top] with your middle fingers and with your index fingers apply a gentle pressure to the top [or bottom] of the coupling until you feel the pouch is correctly positioned to the barriers”
If you follow the above instructions, you’ll attach the bad in a couple of seconds. It never fails!.
Awesome tip! Thank you for sharing, David.
February 9, 2015 at 8:30 amI think it’s definitely worth a try, Laura. A new bag always feels a little weird at first, but I think this one has some great features. And thankfully, you can order some free samples and see what you think!
September 17, 2014 at 10:29 amI typically use the sensura click 2 piece, and currently trying the mio 2 piece out. I hate the filter. I wish they would make a pouch without the filter. I wear my pouch horizontal and turn it to empty. Being horizontal the filter collects stuff. I also hate the pouch being clear under the cover. Love the wafer part though! I can’t comment on the edges peeling because I use a sure seal every time. I usually can get 7-10 days out of wafer before it breaks down. I wish they would make smaller pouches. I am quite petite and even the small ones look huge. I don’t mind emptying frequently, I hate carrying around crap…LoL.
November 7, 2014 at 1:57 amI have had an ileostomy since 1975. The upper portion of the stoma is plus; but the lower half is convex. Tried the Mio product; but had leakage. Currently, using Coloplast Assura wafer # 14234 with a barrier ring cut in half, with corresponding drainable pouch? Has anybody found a better system
October 16, 2014 at 12:11 pmI have started using the Mio and had a problem attaching the two piece at first, then decided to attach the bag to the wafer when I received them and let them stay attached until I am ready to put them on, unattach, cut the hole, position everything on then reattach, so much easier to attach then, doesn’t take any more effort then than the other coloplast two pieces.. If you like the wafer it’s worth a try, works for me. I like everything but how hard it is to clean the large filter, but other than that love the Mio.
November 4, 2014 at 8:13 pmCan anyone describe for me how to clean the filter? I didn’t know that I was supposed to do that. Thank you
November 5, 2014 at 6:30 amI was really in love with the way the Mio wafer went on, not crazy about the plastic belt loops around the ring, but wow, the precut small barrier was great. Sadly, the pouch is just a deal breaker. Lovely color and material and hard as hell to get on. I don’t have the luxury of lying down when I have to change a pouch at work and there’s no way I could struggle with getting it on for 15 or 20 minutes. I thought the filter was going to be iffy and it was; I think we all know that when the filter gets saturated it no longer filters and becomes a source of odor. And this one is HUGE. But my “done with you!” moment came when I drained it and soiled all those little pieces of Velcro (did anyone think there was just too much stuff to deal with)) and in trying to rinse it clean the Velcro bar (the fluffy fabric is a terrible idea for something like this) it came unglued and slid down the drain – leaving me unable to close the pouch. At work. No way I folded it up and managed to stuff it inside the cover until I could get to my old, ugly, blessed Convatec two piece in my kit.
November 7, 2014 at 1:23 amThis is probably great for people who have very little effluent, do not work, and have lots of time to fuss with it and can discard them when they’re soiled because there is no way to clean them without destroying the Velcro. I was very disappointed – I’d hoped for so much better – but I’m not taking a second chance on something that failed me so miserably. The wafers, though, they are awesome.
Well I certainly did not get any effluent on the Velcro when emptying my Mio. The end folded down and was clear and free to empty, so I can’t imagine how you would get theVelcro soiled. When out and snout, well, flat envy emptying, I use soft toilet tissue to squeeze the end flap, and wipe it thoroughly until is is spotlessly clean.
May 21, 2016 at 3:38 amPlease forgive the errors in my post, it had been auto correcting my text and I did not notice – doh!!
May 21, 2016 at 3:45 amPlease do not put my name on reviews on here!! Lots of people do not know of my ostomy !!! I’ve changed it here on this one.
I’m also having endless problems with this. I tried the click system and that wasn’t working for me – too hard to attach. Then I tried the flex system. Easier to attach. But I get max two days from it (usually 1 1/2 and sometimes one) before the stench is overwhelming. I agree, I think if the filter gets any “stuff” in it, that’s it – you need to change it. And apparently it is easy for the filter to get dirty.
November 7, 2014 at 9:14 amI called Coloplast to see how to clean the filter and they said that I shouldn’t need to do that (and they never did tell me how).
On top of all this, I order thru Byram Healthcare and they have not yet once sent my order right. For months.
This is the strangest purchasing process. You buy something sight unseen, hope the right amount shows up (because no way to check it) and at least for me, I can’t reorder mid-month if I need more. So I find myself using my old bags still. (I have extras of those.)
I love the no ballooning and the new fabric but the stench is bad.
Hi Marie! I saw your comment here and thought I would write you a not. My name is Susie, and I work for Coloplast. Would you like another rep to call you to talk through some of things you’re experiencing? You can comment back and let me know- I’d be happy to reach out to one of our ostomy product specialists and arrange a call for you!
November 7, 2014 at 11:03 am-Susie
Susie, that would be so awesome. There are so many things that I do like about this new product. I want to love it. But I’m hitting some stumbling blocks. What is the best way to connect?
November 7, 2014 at 9:46 pmHi Marie! Why don’t you send me an email at ussuclark@coloplast.com. I can help get you connected with someone to help!
November 10, 2014 at 4:50 pmHi. I have an ileostomy and love the sensura mio for their seal and comfort but am having huge inconsistencies with the odour control
February 27, 2015 at 1:48 pmSome seem fine and others are terrible. I am in the Uk
Has there been a problem do you know kno. Think I will have to change products if not but love it other
Wise 🙁
I don’t know if there is a problem but I have that same issue with odor control. Sometimes it is fine and the bag lasts for days and other times, it feels like the odor is strong after less than 24 hours.
March 6, 2015 at 11:22 amI am still using it thought….
I have sent the following email to Susie at Coloplast:
June 23, 2016 at 6:39 pmHi Susie
I’m emailing you after reading the many comments about the Sensura Mio on the Stolen Colon Website. I have commented on there.
I have had my Ileostomy for 45 years – and I’m STILL looking for my Holy Grail One piece bag !!!!
My Review of the Mio:
GOOD POINTS:
– I LOVE the material and colour. It dries in no time after a shower.
– Great that there is not much “rustling” sound when worn.
– SO comfortable, you can’t feel you’ve got it on!!
– Fabulous shape, being not so round shaped as other bags.
-, Great opening fastener.
– Wonderful option that you can fasten up the bag higher if you wish, thanks to the TWO Velcro anchor strips. Great for wearing under a swimming costume or for intimate times.
– Great see through window.
AND NOW THE BAD POINTS:
It is SUCH a shame that this bag, which COULD be the VERY BEST on the market, is completely spoiled, due to the following:
– LEAKS, LEAKS, LEAKS!! Every time I have worn the Mio, I have had a leak on the one piece from the INNER RING of the wafer. It is NOT STICKY ENOUGH!! and lifts around the stoma, so the leak quickly spreads to the fabulous thin outer surface of the wafer. I’d rather have a bag more difficult to remove than one that stands a chance of leaking! I need a “bomb-proof” bag. I had leaks from the Mio wearing loose clothing, and would not dare wear this bag under tight jeans!! No confidence wearing the Mio.
– Filter is overkill, too large – and it releases a SMELL!! I am not confident standing close to people because of this – so, again, no confidence in the Mio.
Well Susie…..hope the above helps and that you can feedback the faults I find with the Mio to your relevant guys, I’m not the only one with the same issues. The problems need to be rectified NOW, and announce the changes when made, as many people will already have moved away from using the Mio – and you need to get those folks back!!
All the very best.
I tired the mio 2-piece click system as well… I’m new to the world of ostomies and it’s nice to hear I wasn’t the only one having difficulty attaching the bag. I struggled to secure properly, and as mentioned in the above comments I actually had to lay down to do so. I liked the filter initially, until I noticed an odor. At first it wasn’t anything terrible, but as the filter saturated it became increasingly worse -haha my family members even started to notice. This caused some concern, as I was more worried I had a leak under the barrier; luckily I was still at home recovering from the surgery, so it wasn’t too problematic to change the bag. A quick change revealed no leaks, just a stinky filter :P. I did like the ‘viewing window’ and the water resistant cover, but these features didn’t out weigh the negative points for me. Thanks for another awesome video!
November 25, 2014 at 9:32 pmFirst I would like to say that I am happy to have found this blog. I had my first (of three) surgery in September and it’s great to find other people who have had the same issues as me. I tried this new bag on a recommendation from my stoma nurse. I liked the 2 piece system but wanted something that sat flatter to my stomach; I had previously been using the Hollister New Image Drainable Pouch with filter. I wanted so badly to love this bag. I liked that it was pretty flat against my stomach. I liked that it was easy to dry off after a shower. I liked that it didn’t turn into an air bag in the middle of the night. I liked that the bag was much shorter than the standard 12 inch bags and that I could wear it under my clothes without it peaking out. But unfortunately I didn’t like the puss filled blisters that is gave me around the adhesive. I also didn’t like the small amount of leakage around my stoma. Ultimately, I switched back to the trusty Hollister bags; I use a 7 inch bag during the day and a 12 inch bag at night. I change the bag each morning after a shower. I may try Coloplast bags again because I have 30 bags at home, I wanted to like them so badly.
November 12, 2014 at 5:20 pmThat’s awesome! Coloplast is a great company creating very helpful products. I think I will get a sample and try it out. Did you hear about Lewcardia LAD? They are creating a uniquely fitted bag for patients. It is pretty cool. I also recommend http://www.ostomytips.com/ for more info.
November 24, 2014 at 12:47 amThanks for this mini review, I’m actually going in for surgery this Saturday to have my ileostomy! I met the stoma team this week and the hospital I’m being seen at (I’m from the UK) actually use these SenSura Mio bags from the get go and will be what I’m supplied with to start me off, so I will be excited to try it out as I have heard good things! Thanks again x
April 16, 2015 at 7:41 amGood luck with the surgery, Rebecca. I hope all goes well. It sounds like you have a very positive outlook which, I promise, will help so much! Please check back in and let us know how everything goes.
April 16, 2015 at 11:35 amHaving worn the SenSura Xpro click for almost 4 years, so I am pretty adept at coupling the wafer and the pouch, I sampled the new Mio. The ring is smaller and took 10-15 minutes to even get it to click. Then the spring to hold it “securely”. It is over kill for the coupling- that is not where the leaks happen. The struggling to get the coupling to fit caused compromise to the wafer. I used up both samples in < 48 hours, and had the worst skin breakdown ever. The advise to "couple them before applying to my abdomen" or "just use the flex system" is counter to why I use the click system (so I can see that I am getting my wafer on correctly).
May 22, 2015 at 4:03 pmWhen the rep called to ask how I liked the new system, I discussed it with him at length. He told me they were going to fix the coupling ring. Is this for real or was he just blowing me off? The Pre-filter picks up a lot of effluent, and swells up. I couldn't wear one long enough to see if it did help with the ballooning.
I really wanted this to work, but there are still some bugs in the system.
I tried the wafers and bags I was sent as samples, and while I do love how the wafer adheres to my skin crevices, I cannot stand the stench. Also, because I have a deep dip on the right side of my stoma, I still have leaks on that side, regardless of how pliable the wafer is. I also love the feeling of having nothing on my skin. The wafer is so lightweight. However, I cannot get past the smell coming from the filter. I have had to change the appliance every day. That is not cost effective for me. I’d love to have this work for me, but it doesn’t look like it will. I’ve gone back to Hollister.
June 30, 2015 at 2:59 pmSusie,
September 4, 2015 at 7:46 pmmy husband has a ileostomy. Do you have anything for intamacy or showers?
I’ve been using the Sensura Mio one-piece for my temporary ileostomy for about 6 weeks now, with only another 5 to go before reversal surgery. The clean design is very attractive, the soft waterproof fabric is super easy to manage when showering, and in general my skin is handling the adhesive fairly well especially with the help of the miraculous Coloplast Skin Barrier Wipe. But I find that the pre-filter ring becomes quite heavy after two or 2.5 days, sometimes leading to stool seepage under the wafer adhesive. I also have ballooning problems every night, peaking around 4:00 am, even if I eat nothing after 7:00pm. If the filter is supposed to help dissipate gas, I haven’t seen it. Instead I wake up in bed, lie on my back and carefully “burp” the illy bag so I can rest comfortably for another 9 minutes until I have to wake up. Not good for rest.
October 27, 2015 at 11:58 pmNew to this blogs but wanted to comment. My mother has had her permanent ileostomy since 2010. She is 92 years old. We use Convatec convex moldable wafers & drainable (clear) bags with filter for air release. It is wonderful! She actually changed them herself even at her age until she had a stroke last year. We change it every 3 days. We probably could go longer but do not want to take the risk of leakage as it is not worth it. The best thing for irritation is Cavilon (3M) no sting skin barrier wipes #3344. They come 25 per box. We use one each time we change & no skin irritation at all in years.
November 11, 2015 at 12:51 pmHi Stephanie,
November 11, 2015 at 4:49 pmI have sent away for some samples, I normally use Hollister products but can tell you I am looking forward to trying the Mio. I prefer two piece with Convexity but couldn’t see that option on the Coloplast Australia website, so hopefully they do them.
Thank You
xx
So helpful…am new to colostomy bags but a great fan of Coloplast for my urostomy (I’m a distinguished double ostomate.) But on the two piece sensura, which i am trying now, what does the small oval piece of adhesive material under the “flap” do? It is right over my stoma and seems to be likely to “pinch” the availabe room for output which is something that has been a problem with other bags. Should i just peel that oval off or is that a no-no?
November 14, 2015 at 3:50 pmreally helpful post, thanks. m
If you unfold the bottom of the bag, you can then attach it to that oval instead, if you want to make it shorter. Not sure if that makes sense.
December 12, 2015 at 9:02 pmHello,
December 3, 2015 at 3:42 pmJust adding some of my experiences with an ostomy and supplies. I ended up with an ileostomy earlier this year. The people at Coloplast were very good at helping with samples and advice. I ended up using the two piece mio click and barrier strips to help lengthen the life of the wafer. I ran and biked through the summer with the help of a Stelth Belt. Having the two piece click system allowed me to wear the bag horizontally and use the belt. This also came in handy when having relations with my wife. I had reconnection surgery after 8 months.
Hi all my wife just had a loop ileostomy after her J pouch failed so we have some experience with this but with this ileostomy she has more scar tissue we have to work with and we are finding it very difficult to find something that works and doesnt leak. We have tried Hollister when she first had the ostomy and we had no issues with it at that time, but now we can not get it to work with eakin rings or the coloplast bars. So her ostomy nurse gave us some convatec which we tried and could only get it to work under certain conditions, meaning we would have to us a stomahesive skin barrier and then a piece of eakin ring in the creases and that would allow the bag to last for about 30 hrs at the most before we saw signs of leaking. Now we are to a pretty much last resort which is a stomahesive paste that burns like hell in order to hopefully stop the leaks which causes major skin irritation to my wife and bloody skin due to the waste on her skin around the stoma. I have been looking around some more and just found out about the coloplast sensura mio convex flex barrier system which looks promising, can anyone tell if they have used it or no anyone that has any luck with it.
December 26, 2015 at 4:11 amLori and Eric. I too suffered horribly when I got my ileostomy at the end of October. I use convex hollister wafers, I have tried others but my skin reacted to the different adhesives. I have very deep scar creases right next to my stoma, making leaking and raw skin a daily problem. I use the Eakins seals, I have tried others and have allergic reactions. I DO NOT use paste from tubes, which burns horribly, as your wife knows. Try the Brava strip paste. It is wonderful.. easy to apply, does not burn and no skin reaction for me. I always use Cavilon 3344 no sting prep and stoma powder. My ostomy nurse worked well with me, but it was my daughter who figured out the best application of products for me and I have not had a leak, reaction or rawness since she started me on this program the middle of November. Good luck
January 10, 2016 at 4:12 pmTo Lori and Eric – want a bomb-proof bag? Sticks like a dream – large sticky flange that does not budge!! It’s by SALTS, Birmingham UK. The reference is XND.. Eakin seals have changed – they are not good now. I’m using one from Salts. email me anytime if you need help – teddyburr@hotmail.co.uk. I’ve been there, done it….I’ve had my Ileostomy for 45 years!!
July 25, 2016 at 3:19 pmthanks steph.. but with my first experience with the mid I noticed HUGE leak issues.. like every day. I’m usually able to got 7-8 days with my Coloplast bag that’s not mio. but I’ll def give the convex a shot since I use a convex now – hopefully it works well bec I love the feel of the mio!
January 19, 2016 at 4:14 pmWell u did give much info on how well it stick to your skin or is the adhesive is the same also do u use stoma paste. Does shape well around your stoma when u put it on. If u r not aware of your colostomy something is wrong I’m constantly making sure it isn’t getting bump. If u don’t feel it against your skin I would think the bag came off I’m responding to video on stolencolon.com
January 28, 2016 at 10:04 amHello all, I hope I can get some advice. I’ve had my ileostomy for over 7 years now. I have highly allergic skin. I was using Convatec for years but in the last few months, my skin has been breaking down again. So right now I’m trying the Mio since they now offer convexity. I love, love, love the wafer! My skin hasn’t itched once! However…the bag is terrible! The Velcro closure hasn’t lasted more than 24 hours without leaking. I spoke with Coloplast and I’m closing it correctly so I don’t know what the problem is. I finally removed the Velcro pieces and put on my own clip that I had from Hollister. It’s not the best solution by any means but I don’t know what else to do. 🙁 Any advice would be SO appreciated!!
March 31, 2016 at 8:20 pmfrexygirl: I am having the exact same problem. The velcro closure is leaking all the time – I get my clothes soiled everyday. I make sure the closure is tight but it doesn’t help. It is so annoying. I love the low profile of the pouches but this is not working how it’s leaking all the time out of the bottom velcro area. Have you had any luck with the manufacturer? Any help/ideas would be appreciated!!
July 24, 2016 at 8:36 pmI had that problem when I decided to try some samples I has been given. One was the sesura mio and some my ostomy nurse gave me. The sensura mio failed and so did 6 samples the Ostomy nurse gave me. I changed my bag six times in one day. It was not pretty.
July 25, 2016 at 10:42 amI think that you have to be patient, no trying to fight your ostomy. I ignored mine as long as I could. So my bag leaked a lot. When I finally accepted it, my life with an ostomy improved.
Thanks for your input! 🙂 I have had my ostomy for 27 years so I’ve accepted it. It’s not leaking close to the stoma/skin area – it’s leaking at the velcro lock and roll closure. Very frustrating when you trust the pouch at the seal/stoma but it leaks out the bottom onto your clothes! I am assuming it’s because when your output is very watery, it just slowly seeps thru and leaks. It can be a real mess. I don’t have to change the pouch, just clean the end very well after it leaks and change my clothes! ugh. Any other thoughts/ideas? I may just have to call Coloplast to discuss.
July 25, 2016 at 11:08 amDitch ANY bag that is leaking from its Velcro or any other bottom fastener. You just cannot accept this obvious manufacturer’s design fault – and reward them money from using their unacceptable products!! The best bottom “fasteners” are those that roll up and are secured by two side tabs. My bags NEVER leak – from anywhere!! I have finally, after 45 years with an Ileostomy, found THE bomb-proof bag.
July 26, 2016 at 5:23 amI agree!! What pouch/bag are you using? what is the brand and modle all of the details would be appreciated! Thanks so much.
July 26, 2016 at 9:43 amHiya Mom2Mer
July 28, 2016 at 5:10 amMy bomb-proof bag is manufactured by SALTS, Birmingham, United Kingdom. Do take a minute to look at their site? There’s some videos on there. I’ve been using the below for over 2 years now. Hope you get the chance to try them !!! xx
Bag – SALTS Confidence Natural Soft Convex. Drainable. Flexifit Soft Convex Wafer. Infused with Aloe extracts. Cuts upto 52mm. 10 in a Box.
PRODUCT CODE – XND1352.
ANOTHER one of their brilliant bags is the:
SALTS Confidence Natural Advance, Drainable, Standard, Superior Adhesion Flexifit Wafer with Aloe extracts. 30 in a box.
PRODUCT CODE – NDA13. SAME GREAT STICKY FLANGE, lower profile, NOT Convex.
BUT DO TRY THE XND1352 FIRST!!
WASHERS (SEALS) – SALTS SecuPlast Mouldable Seals, Standard.
PRODUCT CODE REF is SMSS. 30 in a box.
With best wishes.
Gosh, I just couldn’t be doing with messing about with bags, cutting filters out, changing bottom openings and fasteners!! These companies are making a FORTUNE from us and from Governments who pay for these goods, so these companies need to be aware that we Ostomists are not going to just “put-up” and “manage” with using unsuitable goods. Don’t feel “sorry” for these manufacturers, with excuses of “well they try to help”…they just want your hard earned cash folks!! They need to do more trials before they quickly knock them out on their production line. With some of the bags I’ve tried, I just CANNOT believe any Ostomists have had input into their design and fit!! I so wish I was on one of their “design panels”!!! If I had the money, I swear I could make THE perfect bag….with a few variations for ALL Ostomists – so wait until I win the Lottery folks!! Lol.
July 26, 2016 at 5:35 amThere’s a lot better out there than Convatec. I tried them and soon moved away. Their “roll-up” Velcro press fastening is a failure. It’s dirty and not secure enough (it can roll down if you don’t take great care!!)!! On their two piece, the bags leaked twice on me – through the filter!! – small spot, round leaks – not good if you’re wearing white. My bomb-proof bag is by SALTS, (Biringham U.K.). It’s a convex, but does not feel convex when on (does not try to force the stoma to protrude). it’s Reference is XND. ABSOLUTELY 100 per cent trustworthy, even in the TIGHTEST jeans!!!
July 25, 2016 at 3:08 pmThanks good review my convetec 2 peice filters been leaking and been using the 2p system convetec 5 year’s nothing has changed with my size so im looking around to change and LOVE the way you can Velcro it 3lengths BUT like you im not a fan of 1peice systems love if they made a 2peice wafer bag also use moldable wafers ive NEVER had luck putting on the 1peice and wish like you had the 2 but good review thank you
April 1, 2016 at 11:55 amI have been using the Sensura Mio one piece since April 10th 2015 when my temporary illeostomy was created..temporary ..yeah lol.. its now May 2016 I’m still using the Sensura Mio one piece bag but have noticed past few months the stickiness on the flange does not appear to be as strong as it was. Even with a SAR25 seal under it..had 4 bags come away last week in just 1 night !! Decided at 2am today try the bag without a seal under it..uh oh by 7am bag came away..lasted a mere 5hrs..had bag come away on the bus..embarrassing to point I cried.
May 21, 2016 at 3:00 amThese bags used to stick so well..my skin is clear and flat so no issues there..it’s the flange.
Don’t know if the manufacturer has changed substance they use to produce the stickiness of flange but bags sure aren’t performing so well. Loads are having same issue. I have updated Charter of this but they say they aren’t aware of issues..despite many on FB complaining re this issue lately..other than the stickiness issue I do love this bag but then I haven’t tried any others ..I might be soon though !!
..
Same here….loved the bag but had repeated leaks. I thought I was doing something wrong – checked with my nurse -made sure I dried thoroughly and used a Secuplast Aloe ring, but just now it gave way without warning.
June 4, 2016 at 5:40 pmWill go back to my old Oakmed option range -not so cool, but the adhesive was better.
I’ve had my ileostomy for 1 year next month.
I ise the mio click personally, and love the wafer size and pouch colour and material. Like others, I’m not too fond of the large filter and odor and weight that comes with it. To remedy this though I actually just cut it out. I like having a small filter hole at the top (like in the other styles) so I just pull the large circle filter through the opening and cut it off. Works well then! Haven’t tried the flex yet however and am curious to see what the difference is.
June 23, 2016 at 3:35 amAmanda- if you cut the spongy large filter out, do you have leaking through the small circle filter? How close do you get to the charcoal when cutting? Are you just pulling the foam or the plastic covering too? Love the sensura mio 2 piece click, but it’s heavy and smells after about 6 hours!
August 2, 2016 at 10:18 pmI’m 7 weeks into an ileostomy. So this is all new.
I have been using Coloplast Sensura Mio bags since they came out and would NOT use anything else! I have tried them all. This is the only one that does not balloon, it sticks very well, and the main thing is it lets no odour out!
September 26, 2016 at 6:17 amWendy Askew 2016
Love the precut Sen Sura Mio. Went 10 months without a leak, tub bathe with it, and never get a skin blemish. I got my life back post ileostomy.
July 31, 2017 at 7:59 pmI use an skin protective wipe and eakin seal flattened under the water and the mio is totally the best thing I have found
