Baby steps

That’s literally what I’ve been taking today: baby steps. hospital surgery colectomy ostomy ileostomy sister
Had another relatively sleepless night due to semi-private room issues and a little bit of a rough start to the morning, but things have progressed well throughout the day. I started back on solid food today, which is the first real food I’ve had since Sunday morning. That started things in the right direction and I immediately started feeling myself getting some strength back.
Around midday, I ventured from my bed, across the room to the recliner. They told me that sitting the chair is much better than staying in the bed, so I spent most of the afternoon there. My mom and I watched “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and my sissy and cousin came to visit me. It was nice to feel like we were all just hanging out and not being visited in the hospital.
After they left, I took a quick spin around the hallway outside of my room. I’m hooked up to about 4 different drains at the moment (I will spare you all of gory details. You can thank me later) so maneuvering around is a bit tricky. I’m hoping to be mostly unhooked in the morning so I can get some mobility back.
But that was my goal for today, to get back on my feet and start taking those baby steps around the hallway to get my circulation going. I’m also learning more about dealing with this ostomy, which is getting pretty active, especially now that I’m back on solid food. It’s a very strange sensation.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring a good night’s sleep and a longer stroll down the hallway. And who knows, maybe without all of this stuff tying me down, I’ll make it even further than that!

You look beautiful to have just had surgery! I am so glad to know everything went well and you are on the road to recovery. What an answered prayer. I think about this surgery and what an adjustment it must be for you, and then I can’t imagine how difficult every day must have been for you and what you had to go through before. You are truly an amazing person with so much strength. I will keep praying and hope everything continues to go well.
