I like this challenge. It’s definitely one of those scenarios where you do something nice for someone else and it makes you feel good.
It really is a great feeling when a complete stranger approaches you to offer a compliment. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing I love more than getting a compliment from Jarrod. And let’s be honest, we all want to impress our friends. But there’s something to be said for that person you don’t know who goes out of their way to say they like your outfit or the way you’ve done your hair or whatever it may be. It’s an unexpected jolt of self-esteem.
And I really don’t believe it has a whole lot to do with how attractive you feel. I could tell someone I like their water bottle and their face will still light up as they say ‘thank you.’ I think the root of it all is that people don’t want to feel invisible. They want to know that somebody out there sees them.
We all know that feeling where someone you remember meeting before introduces themself to you again. You feel forgettable. Like you weren’t important enough to make a lasting memory the first time.
I think it’s important to let people know you see them. That’s why I always try to call my restaurant server or store checkout person by their name. Or remember details about someone I’ve met in the past. Letting them know that they’re important.  You never know whose life you may impact with a simple comment. And while I don’t believe in karma in a very literal sense, I do always try to treat others the way that I want to be treated and I hope that I’ll get the same courtesy in return.
